About the Job
Research on Dementia, diabetes and other chronic conditions related to aging in Indigenous and/or rural communities. Candidates with other, related interests in health equity, capacity building, health systems, intervention studies, health education and training are also encouraged to apply.

This post-doctoral associate will pursue a program of research and service that will further development of career skills and allow them opportunities for engagement in community and academic affairs.

Research and Knowledge Transfer/dissemination (70%)

Under minimal supervision, the post-doctoral associate will

• Develop and execute a research program focused on dementia, diabetes and/or other chronic conditions in Indigenous and/or rural communities.
• Apply for external post-doctoral awards in support of their position and research program.
• Be responsible for building relationships with relevant community partner organizations to develop ways to improve outcomes through health services research with Indigenous and rural populations.
• Collect research data, analyze and disseminate to study investigators.
• Prepare oral and conference presentations
• Develop, write and edit specialized content for communications and scholarly publication as well as for various public audiences, including electronic mediums newsletters, email updates, flyers, ads, brochures, and the MKMDT website.

Research/Administration (30%)
• Under the guidance of Dr. Henderson the post-doctoral associate will be included in MKMDT research opportunities on dementia, diabetes and other chronic conditions in Indigenous and rural communities.
• Will gain experience collaborative grant writing and NIH application processes.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administration in organizing meetings (on and off-site), conferences and in editing and revising materials for publication.
• Travel to community events and meetings as is necessary
• Work collaboratively with the MKMDT team on research, policy and community opportunities that broadly impact dementia, diabetes and other chronic conditions in Indigenous and rural communities.

Restrictions: Annually renewable up to five years depending on training needs. The individual may be immediately post-degree or returning for additional training, updating, and retooling. Limited to fields for which post-degree training is necessary for career entry. Post-doctoral associates cannot be appointed on sponsored institutional training grants, sponsored individual fellowship or training awards. Post-doctoral associates are University of Minnesota employees. They are receiving additional training while also performing services for the University, for which they are compensated.

Note: these are not positions to which permanent residency can be granted for international appointees.

About the Department
The Memory Keepers Medical Discovery Team-Health Equity (MKMDT), University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth campus, is focused on diabetes and dementia and issues of health equity for Indigenous and rural communities. We assume a syndemic approach to illness and disease and promote strength-based community-based approaches to research. The MKMDT works collaboratively with Faculty Investigators from the Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health, and academic and community research partners throughout the Great Lakes Region, Canada, Alaska, and internationally.
