Memory Keepers Medical Discovery Team (MK-MDT) – Health Equity conducts research on dementia and its associated risks and co-morbidities in collaboration with Indigenous and rural communities. Our modern facilities have been thoughtfully constructed to foster team science approaches to research and well-being. The MK-MDT works collaboratively with Faculty Investigators from the Department of Family Medicine and Biobehavioral Health, and academic and community research partners in the US and Canada.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Researcher 5 will work with multiple MK-MDT research teams focused on dementia and dementia caregiving, and will be responsible for research activities to assist MK-MDT faculty investigators in the preparation of research grant applications and the implementation of multiple health research and health education projects focused on dementia and healthy brain aging in rural and Indigenous communities. We will consider applicants from varied disciplinary backgrounds (e.g., health sciences and social sciences) and are very interested in candidates trained in psychology (clinical, community and neuropsychology). This is not a remote position.
Research & data (80%)
- Act as project leader in collaboration with the Principal Investigator(s)
- Review and synthesize research literature; conduct critical reviews
- Develop research articles, manuscripts, and reports
- Create data analysis plans
- Conduct statistical analysis
- Recruit and screen research participants
- Organize and analyze qualitative interview data
- Manage and track online databases
- Summarize descriptive statistics
- Draft research proposals, grant applications and ethics applications
- Coordinate and schedule research meetings
- Other administrative duties as needed
- Work collaboratively with staff and community partners to support the MK-MDT vision of healthy aging in American Indian and rural populations
Community Engagement (20%)
- Work on outreach to rural Minnesota communities, agencies, and rural populations for inclusion in the MDT research and education
- Assist in recruitment of research project participants
- Coordinate and facilitate research meetings with community partner organizations
- On-going community engagement activities to support research collaborations with community partners
- Presentations and knowledge dissemination to community partner agencies
- Serve on committees as requested representing the MK-MDT.
- Advanced degree with research experience
- Analytic skills
- APhD in Health Science, neuro/clinical/community psychology, public health, anthropology, sociology, or geography or other health related discipline
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a research role
- Knowledge or experience of rural and/or Indigenous health/health equity issues
- Knowledge of the health of older adults and/or age-related neurological conditions
- Understanding of rural and/or Indigenous health systems, health access, and/or quality of care research
- Experience working with large datasets
- Experience with statistical data analysis and supporting software such as SAS, STATA
- Experience using and programming in web-based software platforms such as REDcap or Qualtrics
- Experience developing surveys and interview guides
- Experience drafting or writing grant applications, ethics protocols and research reports
- Demonstrated experience with knowledge transfer; ability to write for diverse audiences
- Peer-reviewed publication record
- Project management skills
- Experience in community outreach, community engagement and/or research partner development

Based at the Medical School’s Duluth Campus, the Memory Keepers Medical Discovery Team on Rural and American Indian Health Equity (MK-MDT) is one of four University of Minnesota Medical School Medical Discovery Team’s funded by the State of Minnesota legislature. The Memory Keepers Medical Discovery Team is a $15.6 million, ten-year initiative to achieve the state’s goals of improving patient and population health, lowering costs and improving healthcare experiences.
